Lock 9 Park is located along the Great Miami River in downtown Piqua, Ohio. The park planning and design focus was on three key items; preserve the existing Miami & Erie Canal Lock 9 structure, build a stronger connection between the river and downtown, and accommodate a multitude of uses within the park, including an outdoor summer concert series. All initiatives were closely linked to economic development and leveraging the redevelopment of surrounding historic building as adaptive reuse projects.
Modifications to the existing levee wall in the form of a stepped terrace enable a seamless connection between the lower bike trail along the river and downtown. A terraced fountain recalls the historical alignment of the former canal (currently buried). The project is in construction document preparation phase and set for an early 2018 construction start.
